The Yellow Feather Mystery, (His Hardy Boys Mystery Stories, 33)

Better than You'd Expect!
Published in 1953 - This was one of the first books painted by Ruddi Nappi. The Hardys live at Woodston College and try to help their friend solve the mystery of The Yellow Feather thought to be a dangerous character stalking their friend. William Dougherty the author of this book wrote only two HB books. The Secret of Wildcat Swamp and this one. Upon learning that fact I realized why this book was as good as it was. A pitty that Dougherty did not write more than he did. Many parallels can be seen between the two. I think of the Chapter in Wildcat Swamp "Three Odd Letters" when it is discovered that Wildcatters were buried in the swamp and not Wildcat. In Yellow Feather we learn minor was mistaken for miner - which leads to the conclusion that the Yellow Feather was not a young man - but a mine in Canada. We are kept in suspense throughout the book as to the identity of The Yellow Feather and as to the true intentions of Kurt the Headmaster at the College. Hardy Boys books were never "scary". But the scene around page 110 where Joe is walking alone outside a cabin back in the woods when he hears a rustling in the trees makes my spine tingle every time I read it. Only scene I can think of that has that Stephen King element about it. Very well written. Overall this was one really fantastic book, a brilliant detailed cover art drawn by Nappi. After this volume the series declined. RATED A-

An Interesting Mystery
This review concerns the original 1953 edition as well as the revised 1971 edition, which is a shortened version of the original. Greg Woodson, the grandson of the recently deceased owner of Woodson Academy, Mr. Hardy's old school, asks Frank and Joe to locate his grandfather's missing will which would prove that Greg is the rightful heir to the academy. However, a crook, who uses a yellow feather as his symbol is trying to stop them. Frank and Joe must find out who or what the Yellow Feather really is. This mystery reminded me of a Nancy Drew mystery, although, for those that aren't a fan of that series, don't let that discourage you from reading this book because it was actually rather good, despite having only one criminal. The book was well written and had a fair bit of action. I think most Hardy Boys fans would enjoy this one.

Classic, well-written Hardy Boys book
Frank and Joe are at it again. This is a well-written book that keeps you (or your kids) occupied. (Which is always good!) Definitely add this one to your Hardy Boys collection.

Dig into the past
This time the tables are turned - Chief Collig needs the Hardy boys to help him evade the law!! Frank & Joe face issues of Loyalty vs Law....and do a good job of it. Lots of plot twists.

Police chief Collig - on the run!
This is another great Hardy Boys Casefiles book where you find out a regular character might be a bad guy. This book is good for kids, with plenty of fast-paced action.

The Billion Dollar Ransom (Hardy Boys No. 73)
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (April, 1988)

One Of The Better Paperbacks
I'd more accurately give the book 3 1/2 stars. A magician's convention is being held in Bayport and Frank and Joe are asked to help ensure that everything runs smoothly. Also, the old opera house, which is under renovation, is plagued by a series of accidents which are apparently caused by a ghost. I thought that the book was better written than most of the paperbacks that I have read (the lower ones) and the plot more interesting and not as predictable as others I have read. It's not the best book ever, but certainly worth reading.

Great book
This book is one of the best in the whole series. Someone kidnapped the President of our country for one billion dallars. If you're a fan of the Hardy Boys you must read this book.

The CARIBBEAN CRUISE CAPER: HARDY BOYS 154

it is a very different type of hardy boy book heres why
It all starts when the hardy boys find out that they have won a Carribean Cruise. On this Carribean Cruise they have to work out cases on the ship these cases are fake and are part of the cruise. The whole point of the cruise is to find out who is the best Detictive. The other Detectives on this Cruise are a sassy girl with glasses and 2 other boys. The cruise goes fine untill mysterious things happen to the ship and crew one of these things is they have a cake and there are fake bats in it! but that does not stop the crew from stoping. Now the Hardy Boys have to solve the chalenges on the ship but also find out who is playing these tricks on the crew. Another one of the tricks is on the wall red cross bones are spray painted on. So one night the Hardy's set up a trap for the mysterious person and in the middle of the night they are awoken by a noise outside there door so Joe ran after him, the mysterious person ran down the spiral stairs on the ship and Joe ran after him but the mysterious person got away, becouse joe triped and fell down the stairs. After that inocent they really keeped an eye out for the mysterious person. and asked the detective girl if they could borrow her tape recorder (she had been taping the whole cruise)to see if any body new who the mysterious person ways or to find out if anybody was the mysterious person. (they had started thinking it was one of the other kids)at the end they finnaly find out who the mysterious person was.The mysterious person was wait and see for yourself!it might surprise you it surprised me!

Really Good!
While the plot itself is enough encouragement to read it over and over, the suprise ending really, well, suprised me! The end is much better than other Hardy Boys books, which by itself is a noteworthy achievement.

ReViEw of ThE dEaDlIeSt DaRe
I thought this was an ok Hardy Boy book. It seemed like the beginning took up over half of the book. I thought it had an interesting theme, but it should have been developed a little more. Overall I liked the book, but it really needed a little more effort in establishing the plot to make it a 4 or 5 star book. But I do believe it was worth reading.

This book was capivating and one of the best I've read.
Frank Hardy is at a dance with his girlfriend Callie Shaw, dancing to a band, and a practical joke is played. Sneezing powder is placed in the air vent. Frank and Callie end up crashing their car along with many of the other party goers because of a trap in the road. They would soon find out that their night of trouble is not just vandalism. The rest of the book is solving the mystery of who was trying to hide Murder!!!

The dying trade
Published in Unknown Binding by McGraw-Hill ()
Author: Peter Corris
Average review score:

Fast, lean, no cheap plot devices.
Great collection. The nice thing about Corris is he uses hisspare style with aplomb. The details are used to just the rightaffect. His series isn't much on violence either. Often he's just looking for missing persons and not tripping over corpses.

Hard boiled Private eye set in Sydney; first in great series
For fans of Chandler and Hammett, here is a contemporary writer who is a worthy follower. "The Dying Trade" is the first in a 20+ series featuring Sydney, Australia, private detective Cliff Hardy, who observes the wealthy and the underworld with humourous.

All of the series entries are very good; this first is excellent.

Although you can certainly love the book without knowing Sydney, those who have been will enjoy Corris' excellent sense of place. I like mysteries as, among other things, a substitute for travel, and this one will bring you down under.

Hardy Perennials
Published in Hardcover by Timber Pr (October, 1995)
Author: Graham Rice
Average review score:

adequate, but basic; limited appeal
This is not the type of book that captured my interest. I found it too basic and of limited appeal, although it is a solid work and may be more useful for a beginning gardener.

The "soul" of perennial gardening soars high in Graham Rice!
This splendidly written book not only gives you how-to, but why and wherefore, interspersed generously with noted plantsman Graham Rice's wry humor and keen observations. A true pleasure to read, this is at the top of my list for perennial perusing.

Of note: the British Garden Writers Guild named this "Best book on a single subject" the year it was published, and I find it as useful here in the United States - or anywhere in the world plant lovers might live. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

What Fame Brings On
A review by Manch
Frank and Joe Hardy two 17-year-old detectives take a short summer break to L.A. They tan on the beach, play in the sand with friends, and see the number one hit band "The Funky Four." Brian Beat, Jason McDermott, T.J. Eckert, and Terry Solinsky the four in the band perform their best selling hit in front of a packed auditorium filled with screaming fans. As they are partway through with the song a stage light falls from the ceiling and missing him by only inches.

The story unfolds through out the book leaving you hanging at spots were you can't put it down till you find out what is going to happen next. This is one of the best attributes that Franklin W. Dixon has in his Hardy Boys series. Frank and Joe definitely fit the roles give to them not only with the detective work but also as a 17 year old boy that loves to have fun and spend quality time with his friends and so called idols of that time period or setting in the book. Franklin makes these books easy to understand and get a good hold of the characters and their personalities, with one being a jokester and another being more serious and gets the job done when needed. With this story line you are able to some what predict what the ending is going to be. Then right in the middle of when you thought it was right and you can put the book down a curve ball gets sent right in and you have no clue to what is coming next. The book takes you up and down in places that can be boring and others that are awesome in the approximate 150 pages.

If you have definitely read the Hardy Boys before and have a good grip on what they are like and know what to expect this is one you could skip. If you enjoy the mountain or rural adventure of Franklin's books this does not hit par. As for the people that enjoy city adventure, which I tend to dislike, I will recommend this book to you. Good luck reading and hope you in joy this book.

At the end of every chapter he makes a very suspenseful seen
Frank and Joe Hardy go to California on vacation. They go to a concert of the Funky Four.During one of their songs a spotlight falls down in front of the star singer Brian Beat,so the concert has to be stopped. After the concert Frank and Joe go to a arcade,a suspiscioucs looking person comes by,his hat falls off...Brian Beat! But all of a sudden he get's mobbed, but Frank and Joe save him from the mob of people. Brian decides to have Frank and Joe be his bodygaurds. But the there are attacks on Brian's life can the Hardy Boys stop this viscious villiain??????

Needlepoint: A Foundation Course

I just got the book and find it very informative .
I have a question actually. For the Victorian Doll's House Carpet, the color chart doesn't seem to match up with the displayed rug. (page 67 Needlepoint - A foundation course). Could you help me with this? Thank you.

Perect for beginners & experienced stitchers alike
Needlepoint - A Foundation Course by Sandra Hardy is a wonderful book. perfect for needlepoint beginners like me. it takes you through all the why's & wherefores before you start stitching. it also describes each stitch in detail, explaining advantages & disadvantages of each stitch in including strength, finished look & coverage. the book uses large easy diagrams & has a small project for each stitch to get you comfortable. there are larger projects in the book in later chapters where beadwork, tramming, shading, decorative stitches, petit point, waste canvas, space dying & designing are covered. there is also an excellent section on finishing.

the charts in the book are black & white & reasonably clear. large margins are used & the book has a "lay flat" soft cover, so you can easily view the charts. not like some books where the charts disappear up the middle of the spine. there is a note in the front saying it's ok to photocopy charts from the book as stitcher's aides.
